Hydrangea Butterfly Cake
by Alan Tetreault
This easy yet elegant summer cake was made using a few Patchwork Cutters and Sunflower Sugar Art's Hydrangea Blossom Set. Hydrangea's come in a variety of colors and sizes so feel free to make this cake your own by changing the colors of the flowers or the fondant.
Begin by coveing a 10 inch oval cake ( Baked in a Fat Daddio's Oval Cake Pan) with Satin Ice Fondant tinted a very pale yellow. As soon as you have finished smoothing the fondant, emboss the sides using Patchwork Cutters Trellis embosser. I then used one of the smallest butterfly cutters from Patchwork Cutters Butterfly set to emboss the top edge with very small butterflies. Cover your oval cake drum with a slightly darker yellow fondant and emboss butterflies all around the outer edge using a larger Butterfly cutter from Patchwork Cutters. All the top butterflies were them painted using Super Pearl Dust liquidfied with a little alcohol (Vodka) or Lemon Extract and a very small paint brush.

Roll out a piece of pale yellow fondant into a 1/4 to 3/8 inch rope equal to the circumference of your cake. Apply a little water to the base of the cake and attach the rope. Using the rounded end of a CelCakes Medium Celpin, gently push into the rope to form an indented pattern. Brush the indented border as well as all the fondant covering the board and the butterflies with Super Pearl Dust.
The flowers were made using the Hydrangea Blossom Set by Sunflower Sugar Art. Begin by rolling Satin Ice Gumpaste on a CelBoard with a little cornstarch on the board. Cut our several blossoms using the two different cutters provided with the set. Dust the petals slightly with a little cornstarch and lay one petal on the "mountain" side of the mold. Lay the top part of the mold on top being sure to align the two notches to the same corner. Gently press on the outer edges of the mold. If you press too hard in the center it thins the center of the flower to much and it will break when you are dusting them with color. Remove the veined petal and place in a small foil cup to dry. I made the foil cups using a small Lily Nail former by Wilton. To make the centers, roll a small piece of gumpaste into a ball and glue into the middle with a dot of water. Using a Celcakes Palette Knife, emboss a cross in the center. Dry thouroughly before dusting.
Once the petals are dry, dust them with Royal Blue Petal Dust and then over-dust the edges and center with Royal Purple. The leaves were made using the GSA Hydrangea Leaf set and the smallest leaf. Cut the leaves out of green gumpaste and place on the tip of a Celcakes JTB Hydrangea Leaf Veiner or a JTB Small Rose Leaf Veiner. Press on the back of the leaf with a soft piece of sponge. Remove leaf and dry thouroughly on a piece of crumpled foil to give the leaves some movement and shape. When dry, dust with Moss Green Petal Dust. Brush the edges and lower center vein with Royal Purple petal dust. Cut additional small leaves using the leaf cutters from the Patchwork Cutters Wild Rose set. Dust these the same as the larger leaves.
Roll a long piece of green gumpaste into the stems and adhere to the cake with a little water. Add your leaves next, also using water as glue. Lastly, make a small mound of yellow fondant foe under the flower bunch and attach several of the blossoms with a touch of water. I also added single Hydrangea Blossoms and small leaves around the base of the cake.
The Butterfly was made using the Patchwork Cutters Butterfly Set and Mexican Paste. The instructions for making the butterfly can be found at this link-GO. Once your large butterfly is dry you can paint it. The white sections of the butterfly were done with Rainbow Twinkle Dust mixed with alcohol and brushed on. The remainder of the wings were painted with Delphinium Blue Shimmer & alcohol. The darker body parts were painted over again with Purple Magic Shimmer Dust & alcohol. The body was painted using Brown Luster Dust also mixed with alcohol. Attach the butterfly to the cake with a small ball of fondant that has been moistened with water to stick to the cake and adhere the butterfly in place.
